What Are Your Favorite Christmas Songs?

Don Shetterly
What are your favorite Christmas songs?

Even with all I went through during childhood, Christmas music was special to me.  I enjoyed playing it on the piano and listening to it on the vinyl record albums we had.

For me, the melodies are simple and peaceful.  They are full of joy and calmness.  I'm talking about the classics of Christmas.

Whether it was playing these in church Christmas programs or caroling at nursing homes, they were a special part of life to me.  They took me out of the difficult experiences I was going through and helped me give back to others who heard me play these songs.

I'll never forget the year my piano teacher, Mrs. Tucker, bought me a book of Christmas piano music.  I was only around 8 years old at the time.  I loved learning those songs and still treasure them all these years later.

Several years ago, someone wanted me to record a beautiful CD of Christmas songs that I played on the piano.  It is nothing "fancy" but more the simple songs that I played when I was a child.

If you like simple music, I hope you will give a listen to the sound clips of this CD.  If you download them, you help support my life's work and creativity.

By the way, the last track on this CD is my version of three songs.  Can you guess what they are when you hear them?

Be A Positive Force In This World

Written By Don Shetterly

My heart is sad when it comes to the events going on across our country and the world.  This is not about politics, and if you think it is, you're sorely mistaken.  If you know me at all, you know that I do not subscribe to what the masses say on any level.

I see people that are so angry and so hurt.  I see people that are asleep and numb and disconnected.  I see individuals who view others as the enemy, not as humans walking this same planet.  It pains me.  It hurts me.  I weep, and yet my tears do no good.

There is far too much hate and too little love.  There is far too much judgment and too little understanding.  We stand opposed, rather than united to journey through our lives to discover more about who we are.

I'm perplexed because everyone points the fingers at each other.  We exclaim that we know what is best and all others are stupid, dumb, or irrelevant.  We fail to listen to each other while we scream how worthless all others are.

We hold out to the world just how enlightened we are and righteous and good.  We hold out to the world that we are superior and we know all.  We hold out to the world we are peace loving and conscious.  Yet, our actions contradict our every word.

If We Do Not Find Peace Within...

If we do not find peace within ourselves, we will not find it throughout the world.  If we do not learn to accept ourselves, the world will never accept us.  If we see others as stupid or idiotic or misguided and wrong, the rest of the world will see us in that way.

It does not matter what the world proclaims.  It matters more what you feel and think and believe on the inside.  If you want peace, it must first begin within you.  If you want love throughout the world, it must first begin within you.  If you want others to accept you as a valid human, you must first accept others in the same way.

We're at a crossroads I believe in humanity and either we keep heading down into the darkness of the world where there is no peace, or we rise above it all.  It is solely up to each one of us, but it isn't just words.  It is action that backs up our words.  It is action that shows what truly is in our mind, body, soul, and heart.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2016/07/i-wish-i-had-enough-love.html

Let us be a force for positive change by changing our lives in a way that shows what love and peace are to the world.  This blog post is about taking a hard look at who we are as individuals and seeing what role we truly play in the world.

I implore you.  I beg you as the reader to help make a positive difference through taking stock of your own life.  I'm attempting to do the same.  Together we will make it further in this harsh world, rather than divided where we will not stand.

Let's stop pointing the fingers.  Let's cease to be part of the cycle of hate.  Instead, let our lives show love so brightly that it will take over the darkness.

I love this video because I believe it says so much.  It is Matisyahu singing and performing "One Day."  The words speak volumes.

Listening For The Answer To The Question

Asking the question will bring you to the answer, if you are patient enough to listen.

Sometimes we demand to know what it is that we struggle with in life.  While we may ask the question, we are not often patient enough to listen.  It is in the listening where we will find the answers.  Sometimes listening is not only when we stop to hear, but also in how we take steps forward that feel right to us.

So, don't forget when you ask the question to be patient enough to stop and listen for the answer.

Listen With Respect and Talk Out Of Love

The old saying that you can attract more bees with honey is true.  In these days, we try to see just how much we can talk down to one another, call each other names, and treat others as if they are just nothing more than something that should be obliterated.

All you have to do is take a look at any social media feed about the election.  It isn't just one side either.  I've seen it all which ways.  No one respects the other person.  They just begin the constant barrage of treating others as if they have no clue.

I've seen it from members of my own family as they not only do this currently in political discussions, but also we grew up in this way.  We would pray and sing with others in church on Sunday morning as if we were all one big family of God.  When we walked out the doors and got in the car, it was then that our family talked smack about everyone.

Heck, I still struggle with this today.  I write about it and while I'm projecting this to the world, I feel like I'm writing to myself.  Now, maybe I don't do it as bad as some and I sure don't spread it along on social media, but boy can I falter and put myself up on a pedestal at times.  I'm not perfect either and sometimes I get disgusted by what I see myself saying and doing.

Need to learn to respect one another...

I keep trying and I wish others would do the same.  We need to learn to respect one another.  No one is going to listen to what you say if all you do is bad mouth them and put them down or call them names.  If you just scream, don't expect anyone to listen.

On the other hand, if you can look at someone with respect and love, then your words will flow more to a receptive ear.  If you can share with them what you see and why you see something, more than likely they will listen to you.  It is when we spend the time sharing ideas and beliefs with respect, that we begin to either solidify our positions, or become much smarter as we listen to others.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2016/07/i-wish-i-had-enough-love.html

Listen out of respect.  Talk with love.  Proclaim what you know with an open heart and mind.  These things will drastically improve the world and as we change the world, so will we change and improve ourselves.

Saying It Does Not Make It True

My eyes are doing the eye roll.  You know, when you read something and it makes your head spin around a few times too many.  I try hard to practice what I preach and I probably fail sometimes just like others.

Reading on the social media feed, I saw someone share things about listening to others and respecting them.  I saw how they posted stuff that said actions speak louder than words.  By that point, I was thinking - wow, someone else that sees this part of life.  And then, it happened....

Yep, I began to read more of what they posted online in their social media account.  Do I really need to say what I saw?  Yep, it was more of the stuff that you would see just about anywhere on social media.  It was the stuff they were rallying against.  They were doing exactly what they were so against.

Everyone tells others what to do...

It seems like in these days, everyone tells others what they should do and how they should think, but it is meant for those that don't see things in life the way they do.  It is meant more as a whipping belt than as something that is truly good for not only everyone else, but for them!

I don't care what side of the political isle you are on or if you are religious or not, we as humans love to beat one another up every day.  The rhetoric that is being spewed on the internet is so toxic, that poisonous words are looking for safer waters.

It is hard to read anything online these days and it is just not politics.  Someone can post a pretty picture online or a nice video, and some will love it and others will degrade it.  The comments will get so divisive and hurtful, that it makes my head spin.

Do we not have an ounce of love...

I wonder if humans just hate everyone and anyone these days.  Do we not have one ounce of love in our life, or are we just out for our thoughts, beliefs and life as we see it?  It sure doesn't feel like anyone out there that claims they have love, knows how to practice it or put it in action.

In my own family, I see my holier-than-thou brother and his friends that say they preach love, but their actions are anything but this.  What you see them say and share on their social media feeds shows anything but love.  Yet, they use the "love they preach" as a bully stick to beat you into submission of what they perceive to be truth.

Love is absent in social media...

I'm so saddened by what I see playing out in social media and the news these days.  There is nothing wholesome about it.  There is nothing human about it.  It is pure poison and toxicity.  Love is absent.

It isn't the enemies that we cannot see which are the most evil in our world.  It is how we treat one another and how much hatred we harbor for one another that allows evil to thrive and grow.

It is in how we have lost the love in our own heart, that we allow the ego to rule our thoughts, words, and actions as if they are somehow virtuous.  Even though we proclaim our actions are right and justified, we fail to see that love is being abolished every minute we take a breath.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2016/02/actions-speak-louder-than-words.html

If we want the world to change and if we want others to change, this change needs to start within us.  We need to connect with love, rather than hate if we want others to love us.  We need to connect with understanding, if we want others to understand us.

All the screaming and toxic words being hurled in social media or in the world will never convince anyone that their motives and actions are born out of love.

Sometimes We Just Need To Be Heard

We all know there is so much screaming and talking and ranting and raving these days.  In fact it gets a little old.  I'm beginning to wonder if we as a human civilization have lost our hearing.  It seems like we don't hear as well as we talk.

Sometimes in life, we just need to be heard.  Sometimes we just need for that other person to be there for us, not trying to fix us or change us or anything else.  They just need to be there so we feel like we are heard.

I see that with other people where sometimes the best thing you can do is be quiet and listen.  In fact, listening is so therapeutic that it can be one of the best healing moments in life for people.

We all want to talk and tell the world every thought we have.  We want to feel important and significant, but sometimes we just need to be heard.  Sometimes we also just need to listen to others and let them be heard.

Crazy Is As Crazy Does

It seems like today, there are no sane people left in this world.  If there is, they are hiding.  The screaming and ranting and raving going on is really getting sickening.  Everything seems to be a victim moment or a point where everyone is afraid someone is coming after them.

I don't know these days, because I don't see the same thing as most people.  No, I don't watch the news constantly letting them scare the bejeebers out of me.  I don't gulp the koolaid of religion that tells me what I should believe and how I should believe it.  I really just try to see things in a more balanced way.

Of course though, the more crazy people get, the more crazy each person has to get.  No, I'm not referring to the "crazy people" out there.  I'm referring to each and every person that think there are little green martians hiding behind every tree, car, building and doorway.

Its sad really because by being crazy, everyone has to one up that.  If you do something that gets people's attention, then someone else says, I have to do more.  I have to be crazier.  Don't believe me?  Take a look at the Facebook news feed.  Take a look at the Twitter news feed.

If you still don't believe me, stand back a minute and look at how much of the news is dominated by the discussion of politics and who is right or wrong.  If you want to see crazy, stand back and drop your political beliefs for one minute so you can be objective.  You will see crazy!

At some point this world is going to spin out of control.  Hopefully we catch ourselves before it is too late.  At this point though, I'm not so confident we can.

After all, no one listens to one another.  Everyone has dug their own foxhole (thanks Frank Burns).  It is just one crazy act and statement and person and politician after another with no hopes of letting up!

However, I still hope that maybe crazy is as crazy does, won't be the norm one of these days.  Maybe we all will wake up and come to our senses?  I can dream can't I?

What if instead, we all sat down with someone else that we would otherwise oppose and chat for five or ten minutes.  Have the conversation be about anything but politics, guns, religion or our woes.

Maybe we could just have a chat with what we find good about our life and the world.  I know, it sounds like a crazy idea, but maybe this crazy idea could become the norm.

Record Affirmation And Abundance Statements

Why didn't I think about this and do this before?  Okay, that is a rhetorical question, but I found something that works great for me.  Maybe you have discovered this already, but if not, hopefully it will help you.

As you do affirmation or abundance statements or whatever it is that you may do for your life, why not record these.  After all, hearing your own voice say these words is like you talking to yourself.  It is more powerful.

If you have a smart phone such as an iPhone, you can use the app called "voice memo".  Record it on there and then sync it up in iTunes.  Once you have it in iTunes, you can create a playlist if you want to so that you can play all of them at one time.

If you have a smart phone other than an iPhone, there is probably a way to do this, but I have no idea how you would get that done.  Please feel free to comment and share the steps someone would do to record on their particular brand of phone.

Then you can schedule a reminder and listen to your affirmations or abundance statements at any time.  Make it frequent throughout the day.  You can also listen to them just before you go to bed and just when you wake up in the morning.

If you are speaking to your higher self and doing it in your own voice, then I think it stands to reason that it is more effective.  You're not just thinking about it, but now you are thinking about it and hearing it in your own voice.

More than likely, you will listen to yourself when you do abundance and affirmation statements.

WE SCREAM

The only way I know to deal with what I see is by writing.  My words hopefully carry some impact in a way that makes us think.  I try to write to help others see a bigger picture and make sense of what happens in a day.

Please read what I have written below and I'll hold back from saying any more about it.  I want the words I've written to stand on their own.  If they touch you as much as they mean to me, please share it with all you know.

WE SCREAM

Written by Don Shetterly (c) 1/5/2016

We scream, therefore we are human.
We scream, to be heard.
We scream, yet no one listens.
We scream.

We scream, please listen to me.
We scream, you are someone we hate.
We scream, we dislike you.
We scream.

We scream, how much you hate us.
We scream, to be liked.
We scream, we know the truth.
We scream.

We scream, that you are ignorant.
We scream, how great we are.
We scream, that you're so stupid.
We scream.

We scream, how human we are.
We scream, how righteous we are.
We scream, just because we can.
We scream.

We scream, no one listens.
We scream, no one cares.
We scream, drowned out by others who screamed.
We scream.

My Beliefs Are Right

I find it disturbing to say the least, what I see taking place in this country.  I grew up in a home where the beliefs of my father and of the church were right, but anything contrary to these beliefs was wrong.  It did not matter what anyone believed.  It did not matter if I had any beliefs contrary to my father.

We are in a time where a select few individuals are so dogmatic that if you don't follow their belief system, you are wrong and going to hell and etc, and so forth.  It is sad because I don't think that makes people strong or a nation great.  All it does is pit one group against the other.

In fact, these days the discussion in this country and world is how to stake your ground and then argue against the side that believes differently about you.  It is not about listening to one another and advancing this world forward in a positive way.  It is not about hearing each other out so we can learn from one another.

When I grew up, the sect of churches I went to was the General Association of Regular Baptist Churches (GARBC).  Now these people could ostracize you quickly if you didn't adhere to their beliefs. All of their beliefs were backed up by scripture upon scripture verse found in the bible.  They could argue with you for hours based upon the verses in the bible they knew.

Learning There Is Only So Much You Can Do

Its easy to want to be superman or superwoman.  Its easy to want to be able to help or solve the problems of the day.  Yet, all too often, there is only so much you can do.  Learning this is not always easy and often takes repeat lessons to fully grasp.

I see people write flowery thoughts to others in times of great difficulty and while I'm sure they mean well, the words become foundations of sand.  The minute the water levels rise, the foundations wash away.  I do understand that its not always easy to know what to say and when to say anything.  I get that.  What I don't quite understand is how empty the words can often be to someone struggling to go one more day.

When I've been through the pain and rough moments of life, I often cherished those that would just sit there with me and listen.  They would listen to my stories as I told them through the tears and pain I felt.  They didn't try to tell me to get over it or move on or that some entity would make everything better.  They just listened and they listened with an open ear, having no judgement or preconceived ideas of what should or should not happen.

Talking Without Listening

Time and time again, I see just how disconnected we are becoming as a human species.  Communication is poor at best and yet, we have all these communication devices to help us stay in touch.  It is really sad to watch if you sit back and take it all in.

Listening is the key skill that we've missed.  I see so many talk without listening.  Its like everyone has more on their mind of what to say, than to spend a split second listening.  Everyone has their minds running at such a fast rate and their nervous system pumped up as if it was on steroids, only to skip the part of listening to another person.

The past week I saw this happen so many times, it almost made my head completely spin around.  Talking without listening was at every corner I turned.  I remember the one lady in a Fedex office that didn't even know what I was trying to do, but she was already giving me an answer.  I remember the support person on the phone that started telling me what I needed to do, long before they were aware of what the situation was.

One Person Can Make A Difference

Our lives touch many.  Through our lives we touch far more than we often know.  Yet, it is too easy to walk around in a vacuum thinking that we impact very few, let alone the world.  I've always believed that one person can make a difference and history proves this to be true.

Whether it is through our words, our attitude or our actions, we impact one another.  It may be for better or worse, but we definitely impact those around us.  By touch everyone around us, we touch the entire world for we are connected to each other on this earth.

Take for instance if you get up in the morning and are in a bad mood.  You grumpily say good morning to your significant other or children.  They in turn pick up on what you say and what is not spoken which they then pass along to everyone they meet.  While the full effect may become diluted with each person it is passed on to, the initial grumpy greeting still carries the energy with it.  As it continues, some people are able to wash it away and others magnify it, thereby continuing the grumpy energy along to many more than you could possibly know.

Just Sayin

Lately I see and hear the phrase "just sayin" being thrown around as a modern day jingle.  I'm amazed at how much it is said and the context in which it is stated.  To me, it is a statement made with great condescension, judgement, and lack of respect.

In fact, the urban dictionary attempts to define it as someone making a statement without having all the facts.  It is like, someone does not know what they are talking about, yet they make the statement anyway.  That's pretty amazing when you think about it, but in many ways that is how our public discourse occurs these days.

Gone are the days when people actually sat down and talked with one another, listening to what the other person had to say.  People are too quick to state what they think, then they ask someone for their views.  When you do that, you're really saying, "my beliefs are more important than your beliefs, but if you must, I'll listen to you talk about them.".

If you really listen to how the phrase "just sayin" is being used, you'll see the attitude that surrounds it.  For the most part, it is condescending and disrespectful.  It is a judgmental statement at the root.  Of course, I do realize that everyone has an opinion that they feel the world must hear.  The news agencies promote this agenda by showing random people giving their opinion.  They further promote this agenda by allowing people comment on news articles.

Argue For The Sake Of Arguement

Argue For The Sake
Of Argument

I'm sure you could make this post out to be one that is argumentative even if it not meant in that way.  All too often, people argue for the sake of argument.  Often in our society, we call it debate or discussion, but its still just arguing.  People seem to love to practice this and it almost invokes its own energy.

One of the places that I see it is on the internet forums.  Person 1 comes along and the next thing you know is person 2 says something that just seems to take the opposite position for the fun of it or so it seems.  Person 3 than comes along and tries to offer something to balance and the next thing they know, they are in the middle of world war 3.  It amazes me on the online forums and message boards.

I Choose To Look Inward For Answers

I Choose To Look
Inward

While I support people who get involved and speak out to let their voices  be heard, I question the effectiveness of recent movements.  It is my hope that the voices ringing out will be heard and will make a difference.  However, for now, I choose to look inward for answers, not outward in blame of finger pointing.

My fear is that we are becoming a country of people shouting at one another and absolutely no one is listening to anyone.  If we continue shouting, than will we ever hear one another.  It is a sad state of affairs not only for our country but throughout the world.  Those in power do not listen to those they represent and those who put them in power, fail to carry through with their convictions when in a voting booth.

We are in a very difficult place in this world because while we decry the greed of those who control our economy, our economy is created by us.  We each have a role to play in this because we are so driven to buy enjoyment in life and follow our possessions, thinking that if we don't have either of these, we are less than human.  If you compare and contrast what we have to what many other poor nations have, we are all wealthy.  Unfortunately, as simple as I make this sound, it is anything but simple.

Try Not To Engage

More and more, I try not to engage with people when they are spewing vile on the internet.  At one time, I would have gotten in there and rumbled with the best of them.  However, I'm learning that there are far better ways to spend my time.

Most of the time, the people that spew vile are just trying to stoke the fire.  Wow, that almost rhymes!  They really don't want to move forward and they may be wrestling with some issue, but they try to take it out on innocent bystanders.

I saw this scenario play out the past two days in an online chat room of a site I am a member.  The person really didn't not want resolution as much as they thought they needed to air their problem in a place that was not appropriate.  I was trying to nicely ask them to move on because I was tired of seeing the vile repeated over and over.

Life Is Not About Right Or Wrong

Growing up, everything in life was black and white and I'm not referring to race issues. I'm referring to how you lived, the decisions you made and the rules by which you followed each day. I know not everyone lived this way but in my family, with the world I lived in, everything was one right or wrong.

We would go to church each Sunday and listen to a minister dictate what was right and wrong for our life. Of course, they could back it up with scripture, rules, discipline or whatever was at their disposal. There was a plentiful supply of ammunition in order to make things fall into one of the two categories, right and wrong.

Today, we don't have to go far to see the same thing taking place in our society. Whether it is medicine, new age concepts, religion, politics or news, we are living in a time where everything is one side of an issue or another. There is no middle ground. There is no common ground. It is either my way or the highway so to speak.

No one stops to listen to the other person's point of view and sees where maybe they agree. It is all about scoring points and sensationalizing the stories of our day. It is all about control and manipulation to get others to agree with our defined set of beliefs and rules.

Yet, by doing this we show how little we value others who do not share our set of beliefs, rules and opinions. While I'm sure we have our own set of facts, data and research to back up what we say, it is in many ways, still an opinion or belief we hold. Many things that we hold as absolutes in this world do not come close to measuring up to that designation.

If we truly want to hold fast to humans enduring for years to come, we need to begin to not just see things as black and white, right and wrong. We need to open ourselves up to listen to others and truly hear what they have to say. For if we impose our will, our beliefs and our judgments on other people, than we are holding not only them as captive to us, but we have lost site of who we are as a human.

Heavy Handed Intereaction

What if we met the person where they were instead of where we thought they needed to be. Yes, i know many give lip service to this being at the forefront of their interactions. Yet, if we were truly honest with ourselves, we would see that more often than not, this is not the case.

Often through our words, actions and projections on to others, we tell people what we think they should hear! We project our feelings, emotions, fears and body language on to them as if it were their greatest moment in life.

Often, our fears which we may or may not realize that we hold within our bodies get in the way of how we interact with people. These fears impact others in profound ways. We tend to put on the cloak of being knowledgeable or the face of acting like we are so happy and nothing is bothering us. Sometimes we are loud and forceful in our views either online or face to face.

Stop for a moment and think about this. If you are sharing yourself in an open way or struggling through a moment in life, do you want people coming down hard on you and making you feel as if you have no clue in life? More likely than not, you don't! I'm not talking about sharing something with someone that maybe needs to be said. Heavy handed interactions should occur with a lot less frequency than they do in life.

Contrast the heavy handed interaction with an ear that listens, a heart that accepts and eyes that see the best in the people around you. How would that make you feel if you received this versus the heavy handed interaction? It has been stated that listening is critical to how good a therapist can be in counseling. Many people just want to be heard and in our busy and hectic world of noise, no one is there to listen.

May we rise above ourselves and meet people where they are at, not where we think they should be. May we learn to listen more and talk less. May we truly appreciate and respect others as we learn to appreciate, love and respect ourselves while owning up to the fears present in our life. Once we understand this, than we will become more human than we have ever been.
