Hurricane Irma Stress

Written By Don Shetterly
Wow, this has been a very difficult couple of weeks where I live in central Florida.  We just went through Hurricane Irma and in fact, this is the first time I've been back on my blog.  Often I write far in advance of the published date, just to be able to keep up and manage my time.

By the time you read this, several weeks will have passed since Irma came through.  As I look out my window to the street, I still see a lot of hurricane debris waiting to be picked up.  I feel fortunate though as other places did not do so well during all the hurricanes that have hit.

The week leading up to  Hurricane Irma was stressful.  No one truly knew where this storm was going and so the uncertainty led to so much stress.  When we saw the images of the 185 mph winds hitting the islands, it kicked up the fear and intensity for us.  I'm always amazed at how the forecasts mislead you into thinking a hurricane is going one way and inevitably it always changes course.  You would think as humans we might learn this, but we get swayed by the hope we'll be spared, and so we don't truly listen to facts.  There are far too many armchair forecasters sitting in homes, thinking they know what this storm will do.

Bryan Norcross is a good one to listen to on the TV or through his Twitter and Facebook accounts.  He went through Hurricane Andrew in South Florida while at Channel 4 in Miami.  The reason I like Bryan Norcross is that he gives you facts.  He doesn't sugarcoat them, and he has a good handle on what to expect.  Too many of the news media outlets sensationalize the storm, which does no good for anyone.  You can find Bryan on Twitter at @TWCBryan

Frantic People Buying Supplies...

The stores were filled with frantic people buying supplies that in my view, many should have already stocked up on at the start of hurricane season.  Complacency is a big problem, so things like water, bread, and other basics quickly were hard to find.  I didn't see a loaf of bread all week on the shelves of the grocery stores.

People went from stocking up to hoarding which made it more difficult for everyone to get supplies they needed.  It was frustrating, and the stores were so busy that just navigating the aisles was a nightmare.

Then we hoped for the best when the storm got closer.  The winds began to howl and hit the house.  The walls trembled from the pressure and force.  It didn't let up.  It went on for hours.  While we had power, we would follow along with the weather stations.

Tornadoes, Sounds, and Power...

Tornado alerts would come out on the phones and at one point, I know there was one close to us.  I could hear it.  It was eerie.  It was frightening because you could not see a thing and it was almost hard to distinguish from the hurricane force winds that would appear.

The power flashed a few times.  In the distance, you could see the flashes of lights of blue and green from what I suspect were the transformers blowing.  We were feeling good but scared and frightened and wondering just how bad it would get.  The uncertainty shakes your mind and body to the core.

Then the power went out.  The house grew dark, and the winds continued to howl.  We wondered just how bad things would be.  Would our house be intact after it was all over?  Would the new, year-old roof hold up?  Would the windows and the front door make it?   Water was already seeping in the front door, and I had towels down to help mop it up.

Growing more tired and struggling to stay awake and alert, the stress increased.  My mind tried to stay in survival mode, but with each hour, it wore hard on us.  After the worst of it had passed, I finally gave in and fell asleep.

The house felt cool at the moment, but I knew that this would not last.  It was now a matter of how badly the power lines were battered and how long before we would get power back.  The power company workers work so hard trying to restore power, but the main power company officials could do a far better job of informing people.

The next day wasn't too bad, weatherwise.  Normally after a hurricane, I've found that the weather is pretty nice.  Then when the regular humidity and heat arrives the following day, that's when living becomes much more challenging.

Noisy and Poisonous Generators...

The noisy generators of the neighbors were fired up, and many didn't give any thought or respect to where they were placed.  We were so tired of hearing the loud noise.  The worst part though was when the night air was still, the exhaust of them running made us feel sick and lethargic.  Also, the government officials continued to wake us up multiple times a night warning people about carbon monoxide poisoning from running generators in their garages or homes.

The heat grew tiresome.  There was no cool place.  Every day the temperatures outside got up in the 90's, and the humidity stayed in the 80's, which just added a weariness to the frustration and overwhelming stress that didn't stop.

Fortunately, the damage we sustained was minimal.  The cost is not high enough to meet our hurricane deductible so the repairs will come out of pocket.  However, between those costs and losing everything in the refrigerator among all the other supplies you buy before a storm, this takes a financial hit on the wallet.

We were only without power for five days and while I say "only," 24 hours without AC in this hot heat and humidity feels like a year.  It is a cumulative effect that gets worse as the days get hotter.  There is no place to cool down.  The air is hard to breathe.  You get tired of having to carry a flashlight everywhere you go, but at least we had our house intact.

As I write this, I've got friends that are still without power, and we're trying to offer all the help that we can.

Hysteria of Evacuations...

Everyone wants to know why we didn't evacuate and my first question is "where do you go?"  Where is the safe place from the storm, because no one knows where it will go when it heads inland.  On top of that, how many people can just afford to sit in a hotel room for days and weeks should your house not have made it.  It isn't easy doing that unless you're quite wealthy.

In addition to that, you've got things that you need to protect from those who want to rob, steal and loot.  If your house is damaged, making some temporary fixes can prevent further damage, but if you're not there, you can't do anything with it.  Sometimes if you're hit hard enough, you might not be let back in to start recovery for days.

If you have pets, it isn't easy to just take them anywhere.  It makes evacuating much more challenging.

Just to find gas available to evacuate is difficult.  I have a friend who would have been stranded trying to escape the storm, had it not been for the help of some nice people.  Gas was scarce, which was further complicated by the people buying it for their generators.

Trying to get anywhere on the only two main roads going out of this state was a nightmare.  People were inching along in traffic only going a few miles per hour.  There is no way this state could evacuate soon enough and get everyone out.  Again, where would they go?

Too many employers keep people working until the last minute.  The school districts didn't want to shut down which prevent many from leaving.

There are so many factors to evacuating an area, and the media is often misleading on this.  They crank the fear factor up in their broadcasts but don't tell the underlying story.  I cannot name how many people contacted me wondering when I was going to leave.  It isn't as easy as it sounds.  If you had to pick up today and evacuate for an undetermined time to an unspecified place, how would you do that?

What Well Meaning People Said...

There were well-meaning people that made statements that just shocked the daylights out of me.  I had people freaking out because they thought I was going to die in the storm.  I have to say that this was the most difficult thing to hear from others.  It wasn't just one person, it was many.  When you're trying to prepare and do everything you can to stay safe, hysterical comments like that do not help!  Turn the stupid TV off and ignore the fear-mongering, please!  The media (and I mean ALL of the media) reports the hysteria, not just the facts.

Unless you're in the middle of this storm, it is hard to know how people should react.  It is easier to sit on the other side of the TV and proclaim you know all based upon the biased news reports out there, but in all honesty, you don't.

Yes, if you lived in a home that wasn't built well or in an area that floods, you definitely needed to go where it was safer.

This storm was over 400 miles wide I believe, and so there was no "escaping" it.  It covered the entire state.  Everyone focuses on the hurricane eye, but in all reality, the winds stretch for hundreds of miles.  It isn't like a small thunderstorm that most in this country experience.

Some wondered why you couldn't just get a plane ticket and fly somewhere safe.  Again, where do you go?  How do you pay for this when the airline tickets were into the thousands of dollars to fly anywhere?  How many of you have that kind of money lying around?

And no, we don't need politicians or religious people claiming that God is mad and angry and he's taking it out on our homes or our state.  I'm sorry, if that is what God means to you, then you know a different God than I do.  I find that talk appalling and less than human.

The other thing is when you lose power, you've got to conserve phone battery since more than likely, it is all you've got.  Home phones may or may not work.  In this case, the cell towers were not working at full capacity after the storm, and so the battery power on our cell phones would drain quickly.  No, you can't just run and charge them at Starbucks or get wifi because they were without power too!

Disconnected From The World...

So be patient and keep cellular communication down to a minimum.  Don't send lots of pictures.  We're trying to conserve the battery.  Yes, I can charge it in my car, but when gas is scarce at the gas stations, I'm going to conserve the gas I have.  I have no idea how long I'll be in this situation.  Don't assume the worse if you have not heard from us, because we may not be able to communicate.

There were far too many in our local government and media that just assumed everyone could go to their app on their smartphone or a website address.  I'm not sure if their brains shut down or what, but most of the time we could not get out.  We found one talk radio station that was trying to help get information out, but it was mostly for Orlando, not the surrounding areas.

Not knowing what was happening or when things would get better was difficult.  Trying to drive anywhere was not easy, as traffic lights were out and it was dangerous.  Drivers were going through intersections as if they were the only ones on the road.  Plus, there was nothing open, so again, where would you go?

It was a stressful couple of weeks.  I'm frustrated with so many aspects of it.  Some made it more difficult for us and others seemed to care only on face value.  We've still got repair work.  We're still waiting on a roofer to inspect our roof.  We're exhausted and worn out, trying to get our lives back to normal.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2017/07/traumatic-effects.html

Just because the storm passed and the media begins to report on another sensational headline of the day does not mean everything is back to normal.  As I write this, there are people I know still without power.  And I know just how difficult that is.

One final thought:  instead of sitting inside your home with power in a disaster like this, go out and check on your neighbors.  We had one neighbor that did that.  All others seemed to just stay to themselves.  I'm afraid of what would happen if this would have been 185 mph winds that hit us.  I think of the images and stories coming out of the island nations and am not sure humanity here would be much different.  That's a sad and sobering thought.

Hurricanes like Irma are stressful on our mind and body.  We need to acknowledge and realize this because if we try to hide our heads in the sand, it will only impact us later.  If we deal with it, the long-term effects will not be as damaging.

All The Rage Coming to Melbourne Florida

Hey everyone, I wanted to let you know about a movie documentary a good friend of mine is trying to bring to this area.  He does excellent therapy work called Unified Therapy around Melbourne, Florida.  Anyway, he is trying to bring the movie documentary, All The Rage, here in October.

They have a minimum number of tickets they have to sell to make this work.  The more people who sign up, the more this becomes a reality.  If you live in the central Florida area, don't miss out on this.

It is an excellent movie documentary on the story of pain - back pain that is!  Many people suffer with back pain and there are so many dollars spent trying to treat it when some simple concepts can do so much.

Dr. John Sarno found a way to address and deal with back pain, without medications and surgeries.   That's where the story starts in this documentary.  In fact, many years ago, John Stossel did a 20/20 interview with Dr. Sarno about his practices.  He was so helped by the procedures that he wanted to share this with everyone.  Even Howard Stern sings the praises of Dr. Sarno.

I won't get ahead of myself on what all this movie is about, since the link below shows a trailer and gives more information on it.  I've seen many of these theories implemented and I know this stuff works.  In the link to movie tickets, look for the trailer.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2017/07/healing-back-pain-beliefs.html

Go ahead - check it out and reserve your seat.  You won't regret it.  The movie documentary is getting some great reviews from people who have already seen it.  The more that sign up, the more this can happen and it will be a big help to my friend, Jim Fazio.

The End Of A Historic Ride

I don't know what it is, but I've always been fascinated by trains.  Maybe it is because I have grown up in houses that were near railroad tracks.  I remember the shaking of the house and the sounds jarring us out of a nice peaceful moment.

I explored plenty of worlds walking down railroad track, watching the changing vegetation as I went.  I felt like someone out making my way through a journey on my own.  It felt like I was in my own little word that I created as I walked down the tracks.

As a child, we lived down this long driveway from railroad tracks and I still remember that we would put rocks on the tracks.  I thought it was cool to see how the train would knock them off or split them.  My dad of course would get angry and beat us for doing that claiming we would make the train derail.  I'm not sure it would have because these were small rocks.

There was one house we lived in that had a hill just beyond the train tracks.  Whenever we heard the train coming, we would hurry and run across to the other side sitting up on the hill and watching as it went by.  Knowing that we were close to the train as it went by and feeling the power of it was a big thrill to me.  Yes, we were careful.  We understood the risks, but we made sure we were safe.

I miss the sound of the train...

These are good memories of my childhood.  I often miss the sound of the train in the distance.  It became such a familiar part of my life and one that isn't marred so much by other events we went through.

I have always admired the power of a train as it chugged along carrying so many things from different parts of the country.  When I worked in a grain elevator, I remember working around the train cars and walking behind the inspector as they checked each car from above.

So when I heard that the Orange Blossom Cannonball was shutting down, I was sad.  I didn't get to ride on it often and I didn't have the history that others most likely did, but I felt sad.  It seems like a silly reason to close it down because the railroad line would not renew the lease since they needed to park freight cars in its place.  Come on - really!?

The Orange Blossom Cannonball is a fun ride and I think of the cars that were built from the early 1900's, just how many stories they could tell.  The people around the train and running it seemed friendly and nice.  It connected a beautiful downtown area of Mount Dora to another small town called Tavares, Florida.

It makes its last ride...

Today as I write this, it makes its last ride.  Today is the last day it will run.  This train has been around for over a hundred years and starred in movies.  It has built memories for many that will hopefully outlive the train.

However, it is a time of sadness for all seeing that it is coming to an end.  It is difficult knowing that many who kept this train running will no longer have this job.  I wish there was a way to keep it going.  I hate that a part of history is now coming to an end.

I tried to capture a video of its last days and hope you'll get a chance to watch it.  Feel free to share this video along.  I really worked to just capture a sense of what it was like to ride on it and be around it.  To see the video, click below.  Last Time Riding The Orange Blossom Cannonball.

So long, Orange Blossom Cannonball....  So long....

Hopefully the 15 employees that lost their jobs find something as rewarding.  They sure made this train was special and everyone I saw working there always had a smile to offer.

Relaxing Day At The Ocean Video

This video was taken after a trip up the coast in Florida near Flagler Beach. It was a cloudy day, but still a nice drive.  I love this section of the beach because it almost feels remote even if other people are around it.

Just take a moment and watch the video.  It is only 2:23 minutes in length.

See if you can just let yourself get lost in the video and relax to the waves coming in and out.  See the clouds resting in the sky.  Think of something you want to let go of in this moment and just allow the waves to take it back out to the sea where it is diluted in billions of drops of water.  Breathe in the renewal that each wave brings and breathe out that which you no longer need.

Relaxing Music Video Under The Palm Trees

A little different sounding video, but one that I still love.  It is called "Relaxing Music - Under The Palm Trees".  It was recorded back in 2007 at John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo and set to some music I created.  If nothing else, just sit back and enjoy the short one minute video.  Happy relaxing!

Relaxation To Swimming Dolphins

Enjoy this moment.  Enjoy the relaxation to swimming dolphins that I recorded some time ago off the coast of Florida near St. Augustine.  It was a beautiful site just to be walking on the beach and watching the brief moment where the dolphins were swimming close to the shore.

Florida Massage Background Check And FingerPrinting

If you are a massage therapist licensed in Florida, you need to be aware of changes to the law that was passed in 2014 by the Florida Legislature.  These affect everyone and require action on your part before January 31, 2015.  I was not aware of these and please pass this on to others.  I hate to see anyone caught by this.

Effective on July 1, 2014 any massage therapist licensed in Florida or any person with a Massage Establishment license must undergo a criminal background screening and fingerprinting before January 31, 2015.  All new applicants for a massage license or massage establishment must undergo the same.

It appears that the intent behind this law is to stop or slow down human sex trafficking through the massage industry.   While this is a noble cause and I applaud the efforts, I do question if the people who are committing these atrocities will actually be following the massage laws.  It feels in many ways that it is only going to affect those of us who already operate within the law.  Maybe I'm wrong, and please feel free to point my errors out to me on this.  I'm just not one that enjoys the government making this harder for those of us who already follow the law.  The Florida legislature has shown over the past few years just how unfriendly they are towards our industry.

Florida Senate PIP Reform Excluding Massage And Acupuncture

If you have been following my blog, you will know that I keep politics out of this blog.  I feel there are many political things on the internet and I do not need to add to the screaming.  However, in this case, a bill coming before the Florida Senate (SB 1860) will severely impact the life and business of those who are licensed massage therapists and acupuncturists.

There are many thousands of massage therapists and acupuncturists in the state of Florida. I realize that if you don't live in Florida, this does not apply to you.  Nevertheless, I think some of this information needs to see the light of day.  Please feel free to pass this on, so hopefully the Senate will listen to those in this profession.

The Fear Of The Climb

Yesterday, I went to the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and climbed to the top. It was 203 steps up a winding staircase. As I started to climb, I thought this is not too difficult. Of course, if I looked down the center of the stairwell, my pulse rate increased! I got a lump in my throat seeing how high I had climbed.

As we neared the top, my legs began to get tired and my knee was hurting. At one point, I wondered if I could make it all the way to the top. My motivation to reach the top was that I really wanted to make it and I didn't come to see the lighthouse just to observe the outside structure.

Finally making it to the top, I stepped outside on to the platform. The strong breeze hit my face, while I could see for many miles. From the shoreline of Daytona Beach to the Atlantic Ocean before me and New Smyrna Beach to the south, the view was spectacular. It was out of this world! At 175 feet, it felt as I was above it all.

My eyes fixated on the ground which was now a distance from me and I grew anxious and scared. While I was safe on this ledge, my eyes and mind saw fear. I had to steady myself, acknowledge the fear as I allowed myself to be there on the ledge. It was not easy because there was a part of me that was scared to death.

I kept telling myself that I was safe and that these fears were unfounded in truth. While the anxiety remained somewhat high, I convinced my mind that I could do this. I changed my thoughts and allowed myself to enjoy the view.

So, even though the fears wanted to get the best of me and they looked as real as they could, I knew that if I put them in perspective, I had the ability to view things differently. While I do not deny the possibility that something could have gone wrong, it did not. Most of the anxiety I was experiencing was based in fear, not reality.

Often, our fears are bigger than they actually are. In the moment, it is hard to convince our self that this is not the case. If we stop though and look at the bigger picture, we'll quickly see how the fears are much smaller and more afraid of us than we may realize.

Fluoride - Friend or Foe?

Recently a neighboring city, Deland, Florida (FL), decided to stop fluoridation of the water supply only to be lobbied hard by the Dental Association to reverse the decision. And so they did reverse it! I've heard arguments on both sides of why it should and why it should not be added but this particular story gave a few more straight forward facts. Those are the statements that of course can be backed up with something to prove they are true, not just something some person heard from another and was passed down from someone else. So here's some facts of interest that I pulled out from all the comments left on this article. Of course the Deland Beacon Newspaper decided to write an advertisement (disguised as an article) for the American Dental Association but many residents did leave more balanced comments - thankfully.

The things I've listed here are but a small subset of information that is out there. Don't take my word for it - check it out for yourself. The more you look into it, the more you'll see and the more you'll know. Each paragraph has an underlined link to it where I obtained the information so feel free to read all of this or Google search fluoride for the complete story.

  1. According to the CDC, fluoridation in low social-economic communities is beneficial. It is the most cost effective way of delivering fluoride to the mass population. Instead of embracing the views of their opponents, the CDC basically writes off these concerns. Their view is that it prevents dental carries inside the mouth through a constant environment of additional fluoride through drinking water.
  2. Alcoa in the 1930's was doing research on the waste they discharged into the water supplies noting that Fluorine was present in most water supplies so it could not necessarily be proved that it was coming from their factories. However they felt the practice of dumping waste containing fluoride into the water supplies should be abolished. Alcoa then began to look for ways to sell the byproduct - (the waste being sodium fluoride) of making aluminum.
  3. Dean - By the 1920's, industrial waste was one of the biggest problems in the US. H. Trendley Dean was commissioned to study water sources in 345 Texas communities. Dean was a former dental surgeon for the US Public Health and his mentor had been US Treasury Secretary and major stockholder of Alcoa - Andrew Mellon. Dean remembered McKay/Black's claims that fluorosis victims mottled, discolored teeth were resistant to decay and came up with the magic threshold of 1 ppm Fluoride would prevent tooth decay while not damaging bones or teeth. The news was exceptionally good for Alcoa. Dean became the father of public water fluoridation. After an independent study of his results, it was found that Dean had engaged in selective use of data using data from only 21 of the cities that confirmed his findings and ignoring 272 that did not. In a hearing conducted by the AMA in 1957, he was forced to admit that dental flourosis, the first sign of fluoride overdose could be caused by water fluoridated at 1.0 ppm. The admissions were not widely publicized and never acknowledged by the US Public Health, ADA (American Dental Association) or other governmental bodies responsible for shoving fluoride on the public.
  4. Other countries have rejected fluoridation. France rejected fluoridation in 1980 because of doubts about whether it harms human health. Denmark recommended in 1977 that fluoridation not be allowed primarily because no adequate studies had been carried out on its long term effects. In 1978, the West German Association of Gas & Water Experts rejected fluoridation for legal reasons and felt long term damage was to be expected.
  5. Fluoride is used as an insecticide/roach killer. As little as 1/10 of an ounce of fluoride will cause death. It is more poisonous than lead and slightly less poisonous than arsenic. Fluoride weakens the immune system. It causes birth defects/genetic damage and is likely to aggravate kidney disease, diabetes and hypothyroidism. It also causes the breakdown of collagen. There are direct links that Fluoride causes cancer according to studies in the 1950's and 1960's. It affects the DNA repair mechanism.
  6. Administered through drinking water, tooth paste, mouth washes, pills or drops. Fluoridated toothpaste contains 1,000 ppm fluoride which is enough to kill small children if ingested. At these levels, it causes gum damage.

While I could continue to list information from various sources, this gives you a good idea of just how bad fluoride really is. I was brought up to believe that fluoride was the savior of mankind and it has taken me some time to begin changing my brainwashed thoughts from childhood. As I dug into the information on it, I really got my eyes opened.

Here's a video that gives another perspective of it that I found on YouTube.

A medical doctor from Orange City, Florida wrote in a comment to the article posted in the Deland Beacon Newspaper which I thought was well written. I'm including it with his permission. His name is Dr. Travis Herring.

It’s déjà vu all over again! Once again, dentists and taxpayer-paid officials swarm out to maintain or introduce mass medication of a very hazardous and toxic substance to your water supply. Whoever made the decision to stop fluoridation of the DeLand water supply made the right decision and saved money to boot. Orange City has saved close to a million dollars since the 1997 decision not to fluoridate the Orange City water supply when the issue came up in Orange City (using the figures quoted in the May 7-10 Beacon).

These dentists represent the same trade group that for 150 years has told the world that mercury in our mouths is good for us (even though it becomes a hazardous substance when removed). The world at large now knows that mercury is toxic in an ever more toxic environment and is to be avoided. The dental profession still hasn’t admitted the obvious.

Since the 1940’s dentists have told us that fluoridated water is good for us because of its effect in preventing and controlling tooth decay. That’s the dance of the one-trick pony. The human being is more than teeth. We do know that the abundant element fluoride is very low in mother’s milk. What happens when we upset the balance of nature and give infants 100 times as much fluoride in formula from our water supply? We simply don’t really know. What happens when an entire population is deliberately mass-medicated with a substance even more toxic than lead? Again, we don’t really know. In a chaotically contaminated chemical environment, it is difficult, if not currently impossible, to separate out the confounding factors in any of the studies for or against fluoride. We do know that fluoride is not a nutrient. We do know that dental caries are decreasing in countries that do not practice fluoridation. We do have reasonable suspicion that fluoride may be associated with increased incidence of cancer (e.g., osteosarcoma), premature aging, genetic changes, and nervous system problems including lowered IQ. We do know that life is tenacious and will adapt, persist, and respond to, and in spite of, noxious influences.

And we do know that fluoridation costs money, someone gets paid that money, and we get stuck with the bill. But Environmental Protection Agency employees (not management!) in a July 2, 1997 press release devoted to fluoride concluded “As professionals who are charged with assessing the safety of drinking water, we conclude that the health and welfare of the public is not served by the addition of this substance to the public water supply.” For those who in the back of their minds, think that fluoride, somehow, purifies water and makes it safer, let it be known that fluoride makes water less pure and less safe.

As a physician, I would not dream of indiscriminately administering such a drug without consideration of need and without consent. I would consider it malpractice. I have no serious quarrel with physicians and patients who, with informed consent, elect fluoride treatment. I do have a problem with taxpayers being forced to swallow their medicine whether or not they want it. For those who, somehow, still support fluoridation, do you really want to impose fluoride on others, knowing that today’s dogma is tomorrow’s myth? Authorities and their opinions come and go.

There is an alternative to fluoride for those who believe it’s helpful. It’s called toothpaste and it’s more than enough. But even swallowed fluoride toothpaste is harmful to young children. Read the label. Children, infants with lots of cavities? - stop the soda, sweets, and juices at every opportunity. May cut down on obesity, too. A two-for-one benefit.

Finally, I quote the Beacon: “They showed a horrifying photo of a young woman’s mouth full of caries and threatened that people can die from poor dental health. They said DeLand had showed leadership and was making dental-health progress, but was in danger of backsliding if fluoridation wasn’t restored.” That was a cheap trick and unworthy of their cause. I can imagine that at least some of the public health professionals there, still capable of thought, must have been inwardly cringing at such tactics.

In the end, money started this fluoridation misadventure in DeLand and money ended it. But it behooves us to be alert to that still, small voice that tells us, somehow, it’s not smart to poison our well.

A Life Changing Moment

Shortly after I graduated from massage school, I had the opportunity to do chair massage for the faculty and staff at Southwood Middle School. A tragedy had hit the school when a student killed one of his classmates and friends during school hours. I was there with others as part of a day of healing for the teachers. One of the speakers was Dr. Paul Canali talking about how trauma affects us and how to watch out for the effects that we may see in others especially the children. As I listened to Dr. Canali speak that day, I was captivated because what he was sharing with others, was things that resonated deeply within me.

After his talk was over, I so badly wanted to connect with him but when it was my turn to speak to him, I could barely say anything. About the only thing I could think to do was hand him my business card because my voice was silent. Time went on and I didn’t really think about Dr. Canali again until I went to a local FSMTA (Florida State Massage Therapy Association) meeting. He was the speaker and that night I was sitting up front. As Dr. Canali talked, he kept putting his hands on my shoulder and using me as an example of what he was saying. Normally with strangers, I would have been crawling out of my skin and running out the door. I, however, knew that Dr. Canali’s touch was safe. Somehow I knew that and I was not afraid.

Fast forward to a workshop he held in July 2004, that I wanted to attend. Before signing up for the workshop, Dr. Canali and I talked by phone where I shared with him some of my past. When I got to the workshop, it was part lecture and part hands on training. Dr. Canali asked for volunteers and without hesitation, I said I would like to volunteer. Up until this point, I had not experienced his work like many of the others had, and I had no clue what I was about to experience. The moment on the table which seemed like only a few minutes was in fact over a couple hours and when I got off that table, I felt like my life was different than when I started. It was a powerful life changing moment and at the time I had no clue just how far this would go.

I began to see Dr. Canali for regular sessions because I knew deep down, there was much stored within my body that needed to be dealt with. You didn’t need to explain to me just how everyday life, every day stress, trauma and experiences find homes within our bodies. My body knew that first hand because I was paralyzed in 1991. Physically I had recovered from it but there were many hidden scars within me that had never been allowed to heal. I had plenty of current problems as well from depression, anxiety, frequent migraine headaches, a stomach ulcer, allergies and the list could go on. I never dreamed that a few years after this, my life would have changed in dramatic ways physically, emotionally and spiritually. I’m not the same person I was and this isn’t some surface changes in me. It is deep emotional long lasting changes.

While I still know I have a ways to go and I still have my demons I battle within me, I’m on my way to connecting to something that will carry me forward. I’m not even 100% sure I understand what that is today and that’s fine, but I see more of my path ahead with each day. Dr. Canali has helped me to understand myself more and see the power that I hold to make choices and changes in my life. He has helped me to become more aware of myself so that I can begin to experience life in an entirely new way. If you would have told me all of this was possible a few years ago, I would have probably laughed. Of course now, you don’t have to convince me because I’ve lived it and the truth of it resides with myself and my new found freedom and awareness.

With all of this said, Dr. Canali just launched his new website and it is filled with a lot of information. Some of the information is deep and may sail over your head when you first read it, but it can be a catalyst in your life. I urge you to go and check out the website and read it and learn all you can. Your life won’t be the same after this point.
