How We Learned To Deal With Trauma

Written by Don Shetterly

When you grow up in situations where trauma and abuse along with emotional and mental manipulation are what you know, you never quite have a fighting chance early in life.  How we learned to deal with trauma and stress was anything but normal for us.

We were never given the tools to know what to do.  We were never taught how to deal with the situations in which we found ourselves.

We grew up learning to survive.  We grew up learning to find the way through what was happening to us in the best way we knew how.  We often were focusing our attention on that moment of abuse we were enduring.  There was no learning how to deal with the trauma, let alone the stress in our lives.

Many of us found coping mechanisms to escape what was being done.  Some of us just stuffed it deep down inside.  Some of us tried to match the pain through the self-inflicted harm we did to our bodies.  These were survival techniques we employed because we knew nothing else.

As life continued, we faced new stressors and situations in life.  The usual part of growing up in a world that is sometimes far too harsh presented more challenges.  Our early go-to techniques did not match up to what we needed for those moments, and so the trauma replayed over and over.  The stress continued to build.

Foreign Invaders Of Our Mind and Body...

Regardless, we knew we had found a way to survive through all the abuse and trauma we had once endured, so we didn't give up.  We kept fighting.  We kept trying to figure it all out, but far too often, our insight was formed because of what we had to do to survive.  What we needed to do for our body and our mind became foreign invaders that we did not trust.

As we get to our current day, the techniques that once served us well and how we survived now fall short.  They exhaust us because they no longer do what we need for them to do.  We struggle, and we fight.  Some of us fall victim to this through suicide, cutting, chronic conditions, conversion disorder, anxiety, depression and a whole host of other outcomes.

Healing is not easy.  Learning to deal with trauma and stress without the necessary tools is an epic challenge.  I know in my own life that I had to see the things which once helped me survive no longer serve a useful purpose.  In their place, I needed to find new tools that would help.

When you have been through abuse and trauma, you become the parent to yourself and so starts the journey of learning how to deal with all of this.  You become the teacher and the student at the same time.  We did not learn to deal with trauma or stress, and now it impacts every facet of our lives.

This is where support of others who have been through this comes in to help.  It is where therapists and qualified practitioners that know how to walk through the fires of trauma and abuse help our healing.  It is where the process of healing, little by little, unfolds and helps awaken us to more of who we are, that we have hidden all these years.

Learning to deal with trauma and abuse is not something that is easy.  It is a challenge on our best days, and a horror filled nightmare on our worst days.

https://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2017/08/feel-your-body.html

I have found in my own life that regardless of what was done to me and what I went through, I can heal and thrive and conquer so much of what was done to me.  I will not say it is easy.  I will not say it is a quick process, but I know it is one that I'm winning.

I have learned that to heal, I must feel in my body and that the more I can safely do this, the more I comprehend.  The trauma and abuse were stored in our body, and for me to fully heal all that was done, the body is at the center of these endeavors.

Yes, I have my good days and my bad days, but my life now is much more hopeful and full of possibility than it once was.  I know that even though I never learned to deal with trauma and abuse as a kid, I'm now coming to a greater understanding of what that means for my own life.  There is hope and possibility through trauma.

Why Do Things Get So Bad Before We Wake Up

I received a question via email that I thought was very good.  It challenged me to answer it, but that is fine.  I like to be challenged with questions because it helps me go in and focus on things that I need to refine in my own mind.  It helps me grow and I welcome questions.

The question was:

Why is it with human beings that things have to get so bad, so horrible, almost to the depths of hell, before we wake up?  And then, we forget again.  It is like history is repeating itself over and over.

My first thought goes to peeling the layers of an onion.  When we hold an onion in our hand, it is made up of many layers.  If we could gently remove the outer layer, we would see another layer.  As we keep pulling layers back one after another, we see more what lies beneath it.  However, until we pull that top layer off, and then the next top layer off, we will never see what lies beneath it.

It takes courage to go in and remove the layers.  It takes strength and confidence and a willingness to leave all that we know, while venturing into the unknown.  This is not easy for humans to do because the ego is strong.  The ego holds us back from truly seeing all things or allowing ourselves to see all things.  Our experiences in life hold us back from seeing what we need to see, but that is part of the journey of life as we discover ourselves more each day.

Our baggage and experiences...

Sometimes it is just not easy to go in and deal with life and all our baggage and our experiences.  Sometimes these things are so difficult and intense and horrific that to muster up the courage and strength to go in and see them, requires an almost Hercules type of strength.  Our ego and our mind tell us instead that it is easier to just survive and numb out or hide and disconnect from all of this.  We convince ourselves that to neglect and avoid this stuff is by far our best option, when in fact that just robs us of the strength we need in order to heal.

We don't know there is an alternative...

Often we don't know there is an alternative.  How our life played out seems more normal than going in and uncovering that which appears odd, strange, and anything but what it should be.  We are often conditioned in our early years of life to accept what we are shown and taught and to disregard anything that falls outside of these parameters.  Even the most horrific moments that we endure can become so commonplace that we have absolutely no idea that there is anything beyond it.  We cannot see that others don't experience the same thing.

Don't rock the boat...

We live in a society where people urge us to not rock the boat and upset the apple cart.  Often, if we do challenge the status quo of our own life, we are connected to others that would rather remain asleep for the same reasons listed above in what I just wrote.  It is easier for them if we don't travel into our journey, because it leaves them feeling like they are out on a limb all by themselves or that they are damaged.  They desire not to see it and by our journey of discovery and healing, it creates a moment where our life becomes a mirror reflected back to them that they are trying desperately to avoid.

Moment of growing and learning...

Sometimes, it is just a moment where we are growing and learning, even if it seems like we are revisiting history and have not made much progress.  These horrific moments of pain and suffering we have lived through are not easy.  They have often lasted a lifetime and are connected to so many neural pathways with fingers stretching to other moments in life.  Even when it seems like we are revisiting them, it is then that I believe we are going in and reworking the networks of all the tiny little neural pathway fingers.

Far too overwhelming for the mind...

It is not easy to do this all at once because it would be far too overwhelming for the mind.  The mind wants to protect us and keep us alive, but if we throw the entire war at it in one moment, it will be too much.  It takes time to go in and dissect the neural pathways of the brain and consciousness.  It requires us to use the microscope to look at the layers in a much deeper way.  All of this takes time.

Healing is not a linear sequence...

Healing does not unfold in a linear sequence.  There are parts of one pain that are worked on while other parts of a different pain may be unfolding.  Those little parts of different pains may be connected in some way that we are not aware of or conscious of and yet they need to happen before the next step takes place.  Without these various parts, we cannot build the foundation we need for longer lasting healing that goes deep into our own consciousness.

If you have ever watched a computer hard drive defragment itself, you can see that some of the bits of information need to moved out of the way so you can rewrite that part of the memory.  It isn't that all of the parts are bad, but they are standing in the way of seeing the complete picture and allowing you to view life in a new way.  Once you organize the parts and clear the empty space, the memory begins to function together better.  The computer is able to use its resources more effectively.

How we learn and grow...

I think one final thought that comes to my mind is how we learn and grow.  If you went to a class to learn some new technique, I'm sure you could repeat the class and learn so much you didn't get the first time.  Our minds can only comprehend and understand so much at one time, based upon our circumstances and experiences of life.  Even though we think we've learned the lesson, there are most likely parts that have not yet been learned.  If we learned everything in one single moment, we would diminish the future parts that life has in store for us.

http://mindbodythoughts.blogspot.com/2010/02/are-you-ready-to-let-go.html

It may be that history is repeating itself, but often this means there are parts that have not yet healed and are finally able to surface so we can begin to look at them.  The history part is the unconscious connections to parts that we were not able to see how they fit together.  As they come up and then come back for us to look at again, we are often stronger and more focused and more able to have those ah ha moments.

What Have You Learned Today?

We go through our days and do we stop to account for them?  Do we ever stop to think, what have I learned today?  Its almost like we just go from one day to the next, doing this task and that task without stopping to notice what we have learned.

The days do get busy.  I will grant you that.  Sometimes it is hard to find time to stop and reflect.  The kids need this ready for the next day.  The boss is emailing us late at night with a question that he needs answered.  We've got household chores to do, bills to pay, groceries to get, and many other things to finish.

Yet, if we don't stop and take notice of our day, we're missing out on so much.  We are giving up a big part of our life's experience that we will never get back.  When that day is done, there is no way to go back and redo it once again.  You either grab it while you have it, or you can just cross it off of your day calendar.

Opportunity...

Stopping to focus on what you have learned today gives you the opportunity to gain so much more out of your day.  It allows you to be a participant, rather than an observer going from one moment to the next.  It gives you a chance to embrace tomorrow with more knowledge than you have today.

Possibility...

Stopping to focus on what you learned today helps you to see the possibilities that lie ahead.  It helps you find the answers you seek to moments and experiences and situations in your day.  Without stopping to reflect, you miss those moments and they could end up becoming a key piece of your life's puzzle.

My question to you today is "what have you learned"?  Please leave a comment below and share your reflections of what you have learned today.

Embrace The Negative

I see people time and time again only focusing on the positive.  They only embrace the positive.  They only invite the positive into their life.  While there are good reasons for that, you're only grabbing half of life or healing or whatever the issue may be.

I know, you're probably ready to click off of here and say, "he doesn't have a clue what he is saying in this blog," but hopefully you will hear me out. I think it is an important part of life that many miss out on, especially those in healing.

No, I'm not talking about hanging around with doom and gloom people all day life.  I'm not talking about immersing yourself in the negativity.  I'm talking more about moderation and a shift in awareness and consciousness on negative people and thoughts.  I know that if you hang around this stuff, it can really bring you down.

Unfortunately, it isn't so much about the other person being negative as it is what the negative part brings up in each one of us.  Think of it as your teacher because it is showing you something that you are mirroring out and reflecting to the world.  Yes, I'm sure that is not easy to read, but it is true.  Its part of our human experience.  It is part of living in a human body.

If you only focus on the positive, you're exhausting so much energy to keep the negative away from you.  By doing this, you are giving power to the negative and actually attracting the negative, rather than seeing what it is in the negative that is there to teach you.

When you embrace the negative, you take the power back.  You take control and harness the energy because now, you have the ability to conquer it or learn from it.  Maybe it is a stepping stone to something more in your life.

Focusing only on the positive means that you're giving up half of your existence and your continued growth.  It means you're not seeing the whole picture.  It means that you're locked in a pattern of consciousness and awareness that will limit you, rather than free you.

Most of the time, humans do not want to be around the negative because it is like asking a person who is carrying a lot of luggage to carry also carry a 50 lb weight.  Instead of being upset with the extra 50 pound weight, we need to learn how to let go of the luggage we carry.  If we do this, we will be further ahead.

Being human in a human body is a learning curve.  It is a process.  It does include embracing the negative along with the positive to find balance in our life.  Do it in moderation and you will be surprised at just how much power you reclaim.  Use the negative as a teacher and soon you will move to the head of the class.

Here is some interesting information from 2009 on negative or positive thinking.

Question of the Day
Do you try to embrace positive thinking in your life or do you struggle with negativity?  What are your thoughts on the subject.

Don't Run From Your Fears

Sometimes you feel like it.  Sometimes you feel like the only thing you can do is run from your fears.  However, I'm here to tell you don't run from your fears.  It won't help you.

I do realize that there are times you don't want to associate with your fears and you'd rather not even acknowledge them.  This is the human experience.  Yet, the fears are in your life for some reason.  You have given birth to them and nurtured them.  They are your fears.

Sometimes fear is very important.  It gets our attention.  It points us to some danger that we need to see.  Sometimes fear has a way of making us take notice and see that the footsteps ahead are not really what we want for our life.

Fears also show up when moments of our life come up which may be difficult to process or deal with at that point.  Experiences from our past or what lies ahead can have a protective level of fear around them.  The fear is meant for us to proceed with caution and to try to slow down and see the whole picture.

Fear is not necessarily a bad thing, especially if you're running from the tiger in the jungle.  You need that fear to keep yourself alive.  You need that fear to motivate your feet and your body to run as far away and as fast as you can from the tiger.

Instead of acting like you need to run from your fears, try something different instead.  Don't see fear as something bad, but as something that can show you the way or help you see things in a different perspective.  Let it light the path and provide another perspective in your life.

Let the energy of fear propel you forward, not keep you hidden in your cave.  Let the possibility that fear is hiding from you, be one of the most enlightening moments of your life.  Harness the energy.  Embrace fear.  Become one with fear.

Monkey See Monkey Do

Most of our life, we've probably known this, but often we don't put it in perspective.  Monkey see, monkey do is as alive and relevant as it ever has been.  I think one could easily describe this as mirror neurons.

Mirror neurons are those parts of our body that really look towards other humans to help us orient ourselves in the world around us.  What we see others do, we tend to mimic and do this as well.  We mirror what we see.  So, in all reality, it is monkey see, monkey do.

Like the small child who observes a brother or sister doing something and they learn from this so they too do the same thing.  It is the same as a young child who watches their parents do things and somehow all of the sudden they can do those things as well.  It is the way we learn and grow and evolve.

Now, please don't take this to extreme like the church I grew up which thought if you do something wrong, you're responsible for the actions of your brother or sister.  I mean, these people took this to the extreme.  I believe we all still have choices that we make and no matter what another person does, it doesn't mean we have to follow in their actions and footsteps.

I believe mirror neurons though help us find our place among society and with human civilization.  It is to help us learn how to work together and function together for the survival of the species.  Without it, we might all be walking in different directions.

Of course, I believe today there is a warning, because as we look at political leaders, they are performing actions that are less than human.  Unfortunately the mirror neurons of their followers are operating at full peak and does not appear to be any chance of slowing down.  I believe these actions can be harmful because they are not controlled by survival or the heart, but by the power and control of the ego.

As humans, I believe we have a responsibility to consider the highest good and survival of our species.  It isn't helpful to our civilization when we act as if we have no moral guide and compass.  Spouting hateful rhetoric towards another really shows just how low we have sunk in following the mirror neurons we see before us.

My hope is that we begin to use our mirror neurons to mimic behavior that is for our highest good, not for the lowest common denominator.  We all need to work together to survive in this world and on this planet.  Acting as if it is us against them in no ways brings about the future survival of our species.

Humans Could Learn From Emperor Penguins

I've been watching a documentary series lately called, Life In The Freezer.  For the most part, it is well done, except for the times when the people invade the space of the animals they are around.  I don't have a problem with them getting close to the animals, but respect their space, please!  As I watched the episode yesterday, I saw how humans could learn so much from emperor penguins.

Let me describe the scenario of how the young are born.  When the egg is laid, the environment is too cold and so the mother holds the egg in a pouch above her feet to keep it warm.  At some point, she then transfers it to the male partner which is a beautiful process in itself.

For the next several months, the male will actually protect and carry the egg in a pouch that is designed to keep it very warm.  During this time, the mother penguin will travel a distance to find food and be gone for several months.  The father penguin will hold the egg through some of the harshest months in the coldest environments of the world.
