Book Review: Daring Greatly - Brene Brown

Daring Greatly By Brene Brown
I'm only partially into this book and I can barely put it down!  I saw the original TED talk on YouTube and that blew my mind away.  The book is basically adding to that!  Thanks Brene Brown for blowing my mind!  (and I say that in a good way).  Daring  Greatly was featured on OWN Super Soul Sunday a few weeks back and rightfully so!

Most likely there are people out there that are yawning and thinking that talking about vulnerability and shame are like the most boring subjects one could discuss.  Or perhaps like an example I just saw, they dismiss it because it hits too close to home.  It could be that others just don't see this as being worthy enough of their time to read.  I'd offer up in a very strong and forceful way that if you fall into these categories, you really need to read this book.

It is so down to earth and a very simple read.  It is written just as Brene Brown would give a lecture and tell a story.  There is not one part of it that is boring or just academic or one of those college texts you have to read when you're in school.  Most books like this, I can only read a little bit before my eyes are drifting off, but this one - it holds my attention.  In fact, Daring Greatly, holds my attention to the point I don't want to quit reading it.

Book Reivew on The Field by Lynne McTaggart

The Field
by Lynne McTaggart

This book is one that I have been wanting to read for some time.  I heard about it when I was in massage school, but never pursued it on my book list.  Of course, I've got so many books that I want to read and it seems like there is never enough time to do that.  The Field is an excellent book.

The main thing I like about the book so far is how it gets you to think beyond the paradigms that you hold on to.  It really does push you to think beyond the box and beyond your mind.  While the information is presented in an easy to read manner, I do find it difficult to fully understand the concepts at times.  The concepts are deep and involved.  I'm not sure there is an easier way to explain some of these concepts, so the author probably does the best job that anyone can do.  I may find myself going back and reading this one again.

I do like how real life examples and stories are used detailing the history of various discoveries.  It really engages you in the process and helps show the details behind the conclusions.  This is not information that you would learn in a normal science based course most likely.  In fact, I have never heard of some of these concepts until now.

Top Book Reviews Aug 2011

To learn more about what books I review, please go to the following post on Top Book Reviews (May 4, 2011). On the 5th of every month, my goal is to post a review of 1 or more books that have had a strong impact on my life.

Compassionate Touch by Dr. Clyde W. Ford (Trauma & Massage)

While I was in massage school, I began reading his book for a research paper I was writing on "Reclaiming Healthy Touch". I was amazed at some of the insights that Dr. Ford had written about because they were concepts that I had never heard anyone speak about to that point. If you work with people who have been traumatized or you have been through trauma, this book is a must read!

Top Book Reviews

It takes a lot for a book to make it into my book reviews. While I find some books compelling and interesting, the books that make it in my book review list are ones I really cherish. They are special books that really impacted my life and gave me that ah ha moment as Oprah would say.

While I will always check out books on Amazon, I'm not easily persuaded to buy books and review them. The book has to hit me and be one that grabs my attention. Otherwise, it is like an exercise in second grade where I feel as if the assignment is completing a book report, which I dreaded.

Please don't think that leaving a comment for me to check out your book because it is what my readers want to see, if going to cut the mustard with me. It has to be much more than that and done in a way where you really are trying to engage me, not just sell me. If your book becomes something that grabs my attention, I'll be more than happy to read it and see how it hits me. Of course, that doesn't mean that it will make it into my book review list.

On the 5th of every month, my goal is to post a review of 1 or more books that have had a strong impact on my life. My reviews will either be a short synopsis of how the book impacted my life or a longer discussion of passages within the book that touched me deeply.

Book Review: Touched By Angels

A couple of weeks ago, I was wandering through the library and the book, Touched By Angels, by Eileen Elias Freeman sort of found me. Really, it did! Actually, I was just wandering and browsing and out of a stack of books, this one popped out and caught my attention. Of course lately, I've been having many experiences that are angel related so my interest in peaked in this right now.

While I'm glad I read the book and I enjoyed it overall, there were parts of it that I could have done without. I'm sure the author had the best of intentions but at times I felt like her own belief system was what was writing the book. I guess, for a subject like this, that is to be expected at some level. However, there were times, especially at the end of the book where I felt beliefs were more the motivating factor behind the writing than true experience. It is hard to say, because she does lay out a compelling line of reasoning for what she writes. Regardless, I found my inner self questioning a few things at the end.

One of the things that I do not understand is how people who are mediums have trouble with people who sense angels. And people who sense angels struggle with people who are mediums. Now, I've heard from both sides how the other really doesn't exist or they don't think they do and that bothers me. I'm one that has happened to have seen both sides and I know one other friend that sees both sides, mediums and angel people. If you're a medium and you say that you don't believe people can communicate with angels, that doesn't fit in my life's experiences. If you are an angel person and claim that mediums are not necessary or really don't fit into life, than that too does not fit into my experiences. I'm more concerned though with how these two groups seem to focus on each other in this way. It doesn't make sense but then if you hold on to a set paradigm of belief, than it at least explains some of it.

Another part of the book that I have difficulty with is when the author starts talking about fear in a bad way. Fear is not something any of us enjoy and we usually run away from it. To make it out to be a bad thing though is simply inaccurate and there were several references to this concept in the book. Fear is in our lives to give us guidance and to help us go deeper into our own awareness, healing and consciousness. Without fear, many humans would just exist instead of pushing themselves forward. Fear has its place in our life but if we become overwhelmed by it to the point where we act as if it is a bad thing, than fear is controlling your life more than you realize. That is not healthy! I realize, that this concept is hard for many to understand but fear is in our life for a reason and the more we discover why it is there, the more conscious and aware we are as humans.

I do want to share some positive parts of the book because there were many and I don't wish to give the impression that I thought it was a bad book. I just disagree with the author in some of these areas and again, this comes from my own experience. I have not only witnessed these things personally that I talk about in myself but I have seen strong evidence of them in many others.

The stories of the people who have had lives touched by angels, now that is something to really celebrate in this book. The only thing is, I wish there would have been far more stories. In fact, I thought there was going to be so I was disappointed that there were not more of them. The stories are what made the book because it isn't beliefs or concepts that are being told. It is just the experiences of these people in real life.

These stories really touched my life in a positive way and some of them seemed very familiar. I was struck in just how simple but profound, the experiences happened. The stories were varied but it was very clear that they had been visited by an angel. The stories were touching and heart warming and if you want to know more, you'll have to read the book because I'm not going to give that away in this review.

There was some interesting information at the beginning of the book on the concept of angels including their purpose and how they looked, appeared or are around us. I found that interesting and am not totally sure where the author derived all that information. Some of it was different than what I had heard at other times but I will of course file this information in my brain and see how it matches up to other things I read and experience.

Overall, I'm glad I read this book and it was an easy read. I enjoyed reading it very much. The best parts were the stories. The worst parts, were the beliefs that got interjected into it. If you are interested in angels, I would strongly encourage you to read this book and of course form your own opinions. Many of these things are not something that any of us truly know. Very few people can describe without a doubt everything there is to know about angels.

I myself have had many experiences with angels and I talk to them daily. I'm really not too worried how others would evaluate my experiences because I know they are what they are. There have been times my angels have helped me through some very difficult moments and there are other times that I just feel their presence and know they are around me. I do feel so peaceful and calm and uplifted when their presence has been known to me.

A Journey Through Words - Book Review

At one time, there was an organization called, Voices In Action. Voices in Action stands for Victims Of Incest Can Emerge Survivors and was around for approximately 25 years until lack of funding and donations took them under. It was a great organization and one that really helped put me on my own personal road to recovery.

The reason I bring up Voices In Action, is that through this organization, I began to write and collect writings of my own healing journey. At each yearly conference, Voices would have an art exhibit for survivors and so this collection of writings was created as an entry into the exhibit. Of course, it may not be the most professional thing written on the planet, but it was a work in progress showing my own journey and my own recovery. It changed and grew as I changed and grew.

It is very colorful and artistically designed with images and pictures that match the words or thoughts coming through. Much thought from my heart and soul went into it. Some of the images are from fellow travelers through my journey but most images are my own creation. At the end of it, you'll find some of my own personal story written which at the time is all that had evolved. If I was to sit down and write my own personal story, it would be much more complete and evolved than this book was written.

The book, A Journey Through Words, is a very personal side of me and a work that I'll always cherish knowing how it got its start. One day soon, I hope to be publishing more work. As you will note through much of what I write, I try to be very open with my own journey and recovery. There is too much silence when it comes to child abuse and my hope is that my life will touch others in a way which enables them to move from being a survivor to a thriving person healing from the pain.

According to an email I received from LuLu.com, for a limited time through LuLu.com, if you enter the coupon code of "summerread305, you will receive a discount of 10%. I believe that is for the 8x11 paperback version. There is a digital version that you can download online which is cheaper but no discount is applied. The offer ends on June 30, 2010 according to the email I received.

Here is the description of the book, "A Journey Through Words"

Don is a survivor of sexual abuse by members of his family. The abuse started when he was around 5 years old and continued until he went to college in 1983. Don has been in recovery for several years. In 1991, he was paralyzed from a conversion disorder and at that time, he started on his road to healing. Throughout his journey, he has faced anxiety attacks, depression, suicide and nightmares! As he looks back, he sees that it is possible to go from a victim to a survivor and today as a result of his journey; his life has changed in ways he could have never imagined. One of the things that Don has used over the years in his healing is that of writing. Poems, stories and thoughts have helped him piece so many missing parts of his life together. A Journey Through Words includes many of those things he has written. His only hope is that it will touch the lives of all who read the words and that it will have a special place of love and compassion in their hearts.
A Journey Through Words is also available on Amazon but there is no discount at this time.

If you would like to leave a beautiful comment and review for the book on Lulu.com or Amazon.com, I would be greatly honored.
