Charlie Sheen Roast 9/19/11 on Comedy Central |
I saw the headline of a Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen on TV (air date 9/19/11). I’m going to classify this as ridiculous. It is important to note that I don’t claim to be a fan and I don’t claim to not be a fan of Charlie Sheen. I am aware of who he is, but to be honest, it makes no difference to me in life.
The thing is, this roast and all roasts are ridiculous as far as I’m concerned! What do these accomplish? They make fun of the person and joke about them. The roast leaves people laughing at others in a public way almost as if to humiliate them. We in this world claim it is comedy and done in fun. Of course to that, I say hogwash!
I know, the public relations marketing people use these things to help bring the person back to life after they have decimated their career or when they need to make themselves more marketable. It is another gimmick thrown upon the people who blindly gulp the empty calories of sustaining nutrition. It isn’t just about something to laugh at because as we all know, words have consequences. Smile all you want, laugh all you want but at the end of the day, I feel this is not a good thing.
Whether you agree or disagree with me on the validity of the Comedy Central Roast of Charlie Sheen or any other roast, think about the following thought for a minute. What if instead of focusing on ridiculing or humiliating others in a public setting, we learned in this country how to lift up, build up and find something good to say. What if we spent our time and energy focusing on the good or the positive in someone and then celebrating it? Yes, I know, it doesn’t make for entertaining TV but at least it is real and positive.
We give up way too much in this country as we are mesmerized and brainwashed by the TV we worship. No longer do we think for ourselves as we have the news media and politicians do that for us. No longer do we know how to be creative for we have the jugdges on the talent shows to tell us what is creative and what is not. No longer do we exercise our critical thinking skills as we have too many other important things to do in our day like our video games, smart phone apps, movies, shows, and everything else we do.
You can claim that I am being too harsh on this subject and that may be a valid point. My hope is that this will at least make someone think about what we are immersing ourselves in and what we feed to our brain as sustenance. These days, the negative comments, statements and thoughts run rampant across our land, while the things that can build one another up are as rare as finding a four leaf clover. If we’re not careful, one day we’ll wake up and civilization as we know it may no longer exist. It is up to each one of us individually to make the choices for our life but we must make them wisely.

I couldn't disagree more.
ReplyDelete@anonymous (whoever you are), you think that humiliating people and making fun of people is a good thing in life? You're entitled to your opinion of course, but I would hope at some point, we all start trying to treat each other as humans, not as something to just torture, regardless of who it is.
