Silenced Victims

Perpetrators of incestuous abuse must silence their victims in order to keep them powerless and allow the abusive behavior to continue.  Many survivors carry memories of raised voices inaugurating a cycle that led to their being sexually exploited. In adulthood if they speak loudly, they feel as though they are being abusive.  If someone else raises his or her voice, the situation feels dangerously out of control.  (pg 152, Victims No Longer by Mike Lew)

Masks Have Many Functions

Masks have many functions.  You can hide behind them, disguise or decorate yourself with them, and use them to achieve a desired effect.  Many incest survivors, disliking what they perceive to be their "real" selves, will carefully cultivate another image - one that they feel is more acceptable, attractive, or self-protective.

Mike Lew Upcoming 2012 Events

Books by Mike Lew
Victims No Longer
Leaping Upon The Mountains
Mike Lew has been very instrumental in my own healing and so I'm sharing the list of events he has coming up throughout the world.  If you are a survivor of child abuse or helping those that are, this information is for you.  His books, "Leaping Upon The Mountains" and "Victims No Longer" are excellent resources for a survivor as well as his workshops!  I highly recommend these resources.

Early on in my own recovery, there were no books for male survivors.  The only book I could find at the time was Ellen Bass and most resources were oriented towards women.  We have come a long ways in giving male survivors a voice.  Oprah has helped push that along as well with her 2 part series on male survivors where I was a participant.

Reading Mike's first book "Victims No Longer" helped me realize that I wasn't alone and some of the things that I was experiencing as a result were because of the trauma I had been through in my own life.  His second book, Leaping Upon The Mountains, was a book that I am not only quoted in, but that it helped me to see so many others out there had gone through things and were healing.

Here is a list of events for Mike Lew around the world coming up in 2012.  If these catch your interest, I would urge you to attend.

Top Book Reviews July 2011

To learn more about what books I review, please go to the following post on Top Book Reviews (May 4, 2011). On the 5th of every month, my goal is to post a review of 1 or more books that
have had a strong impact on my life.

Victims No Longer by Mike Lew (Male Abuse Survivors)

Victims No Longer by Mike Lew is the July book review. Mike Lew has also written a book called "Leaping Upon The Mountains" and I am actually quoted on page 199.

My quote is "It is not your fault. The abuse was nothing you had control of, nor did you have the power to stop it. The responsibility for the abuse belongs to the abuser.

In the early days of my recovery, there were very few resources for males who had been sexually abused as children. I remember reading "The Courage To Heal" and while it was good, it did not really apply to men. Mike Lew's ground breaking book, Victims No Longer, helped me realize for the first time, that I was not alone as a victim. More importantly, it helped me to realize that healing was possible.

Victims No Longer gives that touch that men need in their healing. All too often, men are too afraid to come out about the abuse they suffered because society says, little boys should be in control and things like this should happen. While I'm not saying it is easy for women to come forward, there are different obstacles that men face in bringing out their stories of abuse. This book helps to make that happen and it helps men to know they are not alone. What Ellen Bass did for women, Mike Lew has done for men!

I had the pleasure of interviewing Mike Lew for the Voices Organization newsletter and also meeting him in some workshops. He is a very compassionate and caring individual that really tries to help men find a path to healing. I do not know when this happened for sure but I think Mike Lew was featured on the Oprah Show many years ago.

Mike Lew - Don't Give Up

Mike Lew is an author, workshop leader and therapist who does a tremendous amount of work with male survivors. I know he has helped many male survivors in their recovery and healing process.

Several years ago, I became acquainted with Mike Lew because at the time, there were not many books out that dealt with healing for male survivors of child sexual abuse. At the time, the subject was not talked about and so you felt all alone. When I read his book, Victims No Longer, it was like a breath of fresh air for me. For the first time I was reading and connecting with things that I did not realize existed with other people. It was a major turning point for me.

Future moments would lead me to some extraordinary moments with Mike Lew which I will forever cherish. I still remember the workshop I attended at a Voices In Action conference and how it really began to teach me about boundaries and helped me to begin seeing I wasn't alone.

This video that I'm share here is one that every male survivor needs to hear. He does an excellent job of just sharing some moments for male survivors to know they are not alone and to not give up. There are many of us out there and just knowing that you're not alone is often a big boost of forward motion.

YouTube Video - Don't Give Up

If you want to know more about Mike lew, check out his website and his books. The books are an excellent source of support for male survivors. The second book, Leaping Upon The Mountains is one that I along with many other male survivors are quoted in.
