Felt Sense In The Body

It is amazing at times how various events affect not only our mind and attitude but our physical body. it is way to easy to think that muscle tension, headaches and other physical ailments are something which are just part of life. To think we have any control or influence over our physical body is often lost in the latest advertised medication or procedure.

If we stop and take note of events happening in our life and what is taking place within our body, there is often a connection. Just noticing how we feel in our body, the pains, tensions, and difficulties, we can do so much to change our current state. As we stop and notice these things and feel what is going on in our own body, let us ask ourselves what is happening in our life. What events, situations or concerns are impacting us in that moment or lead up to that moment.

Just by acknowledging these connections, we give our physical bodies and our minds new information. We open ourselves up to the possibility that all these aches, pains and health conditions are directly impacted by the state of our mind and awareness within ourselves.

We have so much power within ourselves to change and influence our biology. In order to realize this, we need to begin to allow our self to connect our physical condition with our felt sense in the body. When we allow ourselves to do that, we connect with so much potential. The more we become aware of ourselves and ground this awareness in the felt sense of the body, the more we will truly understand what it is to be human.

The Somatic Component of Healing

Written by Don Shetterly

Until we address the somatic component of our healing, we may feel like we've climbed the mountain but in all reality, we've not gone the complete distance. Trauma occurs not just in the mind but it resides with a relationship to the body. To treat only the mind or the thoughts and leave out the body, means we are missing the biggest piece of the puzzle.

Virtually most of our society views trauma, stress, and pain as something that needs to be fixed instead of something that needs to be allowed to finish its path and be felt. For trauma locks that energy within us and even though it may seem very silent to the point of us not realizing it is there, the locked energy takes up residence until we actively work on releasing it.

It is a process of discovery, awareness and unfolding. It is a path of going into the dark areas of our life to offer light and consciousness. Let us allow ourselves to continue on our path for we should not be looking for the end points, but the moments of realization to steps that lie ahead.

Less Than Human

From July 2004 Enteric Brain Workshop with Dr. Paul Canali

Trauma, repetitive stress without release, change our biology, our chemistry, our bodies, minds, brains and nervous system. We become less than human, and begin to hurt ourselves and others. We lose the ability to communicate with our internal selves through our internal somatic awareness, enteric brain and spiritual brain. We begin to live in fear. Chronic fear destroys, leads to anger, depression, sickness, loss of faith and apathy. Only through release of these things can we restore the wholeness and health of our mind, body and spirit.
